Hydrostatic Pressure

The ceramic cone is filled with water and buried in your soil. When the soil dries out, it pulls moisture from the porous ceramic. This creates suction inside the sensor that opens a small valve at the top. Water flows through and drips into the soil. When the soil is moist again, the pulling stops and the valve closes.

Water Pressure Powers the Supply

The system runs on gravity through a reservoir/rain barrel or connects to a hose spigot with a Blumat Pressure Reducer.

One Line Reaches Every Plant

An 8 mm supply tube runs from your water source past each plant in the system. At every plant, a sensor taps into the line — ready to release water only when its plant calls for it.

Dry Soil Creates Suction

The ceramic tip sits in the soil at root level. As the soil dries, it draws on the water sealed inside the ceramic — creating suction tension that pulls a diaphragm down inside the sensor.

The Valve Opens, Water Flows

The diaphragm opens a tiny valve in the 3 mm drip tube. Water flows from the pressurized supply line, through the sensor, straight to the plant — only the amount the soil is currently asking for.

Wet Soil Closes the Valve

Once the soil is moist again, suction tension releases. The diaphragm rises, pinching the drip tube shut. The plant waters itself again only when it dries out — without you ever lifting a finger.

Siphon Principle

Unlike the Drip System, the Classic acts as a pump itself. It uses the natural physics of capillary action and siphoning to pull water from a nearby reservoir directly through the cone and into the soil.

As the soil dries, it pulls water from the porous cone. This suction draws more water up the thin tube from your vase or bottle. It continues until the soil is moist enough to stop pulling.

The Soil Dries

Between waterings, the soil around the cone slowly loses moisture — just like it does for any potted plant.

The Cone Senses the Pull

As the soil dries, it creates a gentle vacuum on the moisture inside the porous clay. The cone feels the thirst.

Water Flows In

That vacuum travels up the drip tube and draws fresh water out of your container — exactly when the plant needs it.

The Soil Drinks

Water seeps slowly through the cone into the surrounding soil, then into the roots. Watering your plant perfectly.

The Flow Stops

When the soil is moist again, the vacuum releases. Watering pauses on its own until the plant is thirsty again.

Gravity & Flow Restriction

The Blumat Easy is the simplest of all. It is a porous ceramic cone that fits onto a standard plastic bottle.

It doesn't have a valve or a siphon tube. Instead, it slowly releases the water from the bottle directly through the porous ceramic walls. The rate is determined by the porosity of the clay, ensuring a slow, steady release over several days.

The Soil Dries

Between waterings, the soil around the spike loses moisture and the clay tip starts to dry along with it.

The Spike Releases Water

As the clay dries, water from the upside-down bottle seeps through the spike and into the soil — slowly, steadily, only as needed.

The Soil Drinks

Roots take up the moisture as it arrives. When the soil is wet again, the clay slows the flow back down on its own.
